Arborea Jewellery

Introducing the work of Christy of Arborea Jewellery, our newest member at EcoCreate. We asked her about herself and her beautiful work, this is what she had to tell us….

Hi I’m Christy, I live and work in Tiverton, Devon.

I work full time in conservation (land management advice) and spend evenings and weekends running my jewellery business. I’ve been making jewellery for a few years now, though I started out with costume jewellery using coloured wire and plastic beads, I have grown more refined. Along the way, I took a beginners course in silversmithing and have made my creations using this knowledge and self taught bits from here and there.

I create 100% recycled silver jewellery inspired by nature. I have sourced all of the silver so that every component from the ear scrolls to the solder is recycled. The gemstones are sourced from providers who have ethical policies and I am building a collection of gems which have been recycled from old jewellery. Where I can I use earth friendly methods (e.g. citric acid pickle and renewable energy for my tools) and if I have to use chemicals (for electroforming) they will get reused, never poured down the sink. All the paper, card and ribbon used for my packaging is also recycled.

As most of my pieces are one of a kind I can’t say I have a most popular item but I have made a few commissioned mountain pendants now. This is my latest with a tiny jade gem:

I always love doing commissions and absolutely honoured that anyone would choose something I have created to show someone else how much they care or even to treat themselves to something special. I remember the first silver piece I created, it’s still looking for a new home in fact! It’s a chunky silver ring with a sparkly blue goldstone.

I’m always full of ideas, which is why I usually create one of a kind items, though I am trying to also build a range of made-to-order items too.

At the moment I’m currently working on a silver clay line using varieties of bark. I am making my own molds for these so they can be remade, always with a slightly different finish due to the unpredictable oxidisation process. They haven’t been released yet so watch this space.

I am very much inspired by Earth Gems Jewellery, Silvan Arts and Galvan Art in terms of design. It’s hard to choose a favourite piece of my own, I suppose the one that got me most excited was my first ever 100% recycled pendant. I made this following my first holiday in 7 years! In Slovenia there was the most stunning lake, the shimmer of this opal lent itself perfectly as the sunlight bouncing off the ripples.

So that’s a bit about me and what I do, I am adding items to Ecocreate slowly but if you would like to contact me to discuss any commissions I look forward to hearing from you.
