Charlotte Rhoades – The Captain & Lovely

Charlotte Rhoades is a mother of four children, an eco artist and crafter, one half of EcoCreate and owner of The Captain & Lovely. We asked Charlotte to take a turn in the hot seat, this is what she had to tell us …

Is there a story behind your business name?
When talking to our children once about if they had kids the conversation turned to what our names would be ‘ Grandad? Granny? Nanna?’ we decided that they all seemed quite old fashioned and jokingly said that when we became grandparents we would be referred to as ‘Captain Awesome and Lovely’ – The name sort of stuck in my head!

Where are you based?
In Derby

Do you run your art/craft business full time?
I run it alongside EcoCreate and looking after my children.

How long have you been a professional artist/maker?
I have a degree in Fine Art so have always been creative (I met Kirstie and my partner Martin at University both also doing Art). This took a back seat for quite a while whilst I raised a family. Within the last few years I became involved in Trash Revamp (an artists collective involved with upcycled and recycled art and craft) which led on to forming EcoCreate and then just last May launched my own shop The Captain & Lovely.

What inspired you to start?
I have long had a passion for ‘all things green’ and trying to tread gently on the planet, combining my other passion of art and craft allowed me to work at two things I love simultaneously.

What do you create?
I create hand dyed luxury yarns, and surprise yarn boxes using organic, plant based and recycled yarns. I also make crocheted heirloom blankets using vintage fabric and a selection of preloved and organic yarns as well as vintage fabric project bags and upcycled hand painted teacups.

What methods do you use?
I hand paint, kettle dye, crochet and sew.

How environmentally friendly?
I try and be as eco conscious in my choices as possible, the majority of the yarns I use are Organic And all my dyes are either food grade, natural or non toxic. The wool I use is also British spun Cruelty free ( non mulesed) All the fabric and yarn I use in my blankets and bags is either preloved or Organic. My packaging is either biodegradable, recycled, reusable or sometimes all three!

Which is your most popular creation?
My most popular creation is my hand dyed yarn, in particular the surprise yarn boxes I do which often contain little extras and are on a changing monthly theme.

Are you working on any new lines?
I’m trying to expand my range of plant based/vegan yarns at the minute, experimenting with organic and recycled cotton yarns.

Do your undertake commissions?
I undertake commissions either in the form of custom dyed yarn or custom made heirloom blankets.
