Free Dinosaur Crochet Pattern

I was looking for a dinosaur crochet pattern to make for my son but I couldn’t find one that was quite right so I made up my own.


You will need

4mm Crochet hook
100g double knit yarn – main colour
Contrasting colour yarn – Spine
Stuffing
Two buttons
Black embroidery thread
Darning needle

How to

Round 1 – Ch 2, work 6 dc into 2nd ch from hook

Round 2 – 2 dc in each each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3 – 2 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in 2nd stitch, repeat (18 stitches)

Round  4 - 2 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in 2nd stitch, repeat (27 stitches)

Round 5 – 9 – 1 dc in each stitch (27 stitches)

Round 10 – Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (18 stitches)

Round 11 – Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (12 stitches)

Fill head with stuffing

Round 12 – 14  - 3 ch, 1 trb in next 5 stitches, 1 dc in next 6 stitches (12 stitches)

Round 15 – 16 – 1 dc in each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 17 – 19 – Turn, 3 ch, 1 trb in next 5 stitches, 1 dc in next 6 stitches (12 stitches)
(the trebles should be on the opposite side of the neck to rounds 12 – 14)

Fill the neck with stuffing

Round 20 - 2 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in 2nd stitch, repeat (18 stitches)

Round 21 – 2 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in 2nd stitch, repeat (27 stitches)

Round 22 – 2 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in 2nd stitch, repeat (39 stitches)

Round 23 – 33 – 1 dc in each stitch (39 stitches)

Round 34 – Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (27 stitches)

Round 35 – Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (18 stitches)

Round 36 – 3 ch, 1 trb in next 7 stitches, 1 dc in next ten stitches (18 stitches)
(Make sure trebles are on the under side so tail will bend upwards)

Round 37 – 3 ch, 1 trb in next 7 stitches, 1 dc in next ten stitches (18 stitches)

Fill body with stuffing

Round 38 – 1 dc in each stitch (18 stitches)

Round 39 – Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (12 stitches)

Round 40 – 41 – 1 dc in each stitch (12 stitches)

Fill tail with stuffing

Round 42 - Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (6 stitches)

Round 43 – 44 - 1 dc in each stitch (6 stitches)

Add more stuffing

Round 45 - Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (4 stitches)

Round 46 – 47 - 1 dc in each stitch (4 stitches)

Add more stuffing

Round 45 - Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (2 stitches)

SS to join.

Spine

Select the contrasting colour yarn for the spine and work a shell stitch along the top length of the tail and body, ending approximately half way along the head.

Shell stitch - Join the yarn with a slip stitch to the end of the tail,* miss a stitch, work 5 trb into next stitch, miss a stitch, dc into next stitch, repeat from *

Legs

Round 1 – Ch 2, work 6 dc into 2nd ch from hook

Round 2 – 2 dc in each each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3 – 2 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in 2nd stitch, repeat (18 stitches)

Round 4 – 2 dc in 1st stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches, repeat (24 stitches)

Round 5 – 6 – 1 dc in each stitch  (24 stitches)

Round 7 - Reduce, 2 dc together, 1 dc, repeat (16 stitches)

Round 8 – 23 – 1 dc in each stitch

Stuff leg

8 dc to close top edge together

Attach to body with 8 ss along the top, 4 ss along the top of the side that is nearest the middle.

Repeat for the next three legs.

Face

Sew on buttons for eyes or us embroidery thread.

Use embroidery thread to sew a running stitch for each nostril,

Sew a slanted running stitch for the mouth and work back the other way to form a zigzag.
